It is important to keep in mind that safeguarding the fabric of the building is crucial, especially in older churches and listed buildings. In today’s world, the priority to reduce our carbon footprint and lower costs often takes centre stage, which can occasionally lead to choosing a heating solution that may not truly be the best fit. This approach may cause unforeseen issues further down the line.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to visit many churches, from the smallest chapel to great cathedrals, and the cost of damage I have seen caused by changes in humidity could easily amount to millions of pounds. Irreplaceable wall paintings have crumbled, tapestries damaged, roof timbers have needed replacement, plaster has fallen off, the list goes on.
The best way to help resolve some of those issues is to try to stabilise the humidity in church.
Installing a heating system that will gently warm the fabric of the church, can help. Maintaining a low background heat means no rapid changes in temperature, which over time should help to dry the church and in turn, protect our heritage.
Trying to balance the pro’s and con’s of available heating systems can be daunting, but we can offer impartial advice on how best to heat your church.
It costs nothing to have a conversation, but it is an excellent way to start your project without any obligation or commitment, and it can help give a clearer idea of the options available. It’s never too early to start gathering information and can prevent an expensive ‘knee-jerk’ reaction should your existing heating system suddenly fail. We have years of hands-on experience in heating churches and are happy to share that experience and knowledge with your church.
